Facebook auto-unfriend?

From time to time, I notice that someone on Facebook has unfriended one or other of my boy and girl profiles. Sometimes it is clearly someone who has either taken offence at a difference of opinion and sometimes it is someone I barely knew, who has obviously decided to do a clean-out and remove people that they barely know. I've done the latter a fair few times over the years, and the former on a very small number of occasions.

Other times, though, they are people who I know well enough to be genuinely surprised that they have unfriended me. Because I'm not good at dealing with confrontation, most of the time I simply let it slide but it still leaves me feeling that somehow I've done something that they've been offended by, but I don't know what or why. I really don't like that feeling!

It's reached the point where I genuinely wonder if there is a glitch in Facebook that causes people to be unfriended at random. Particularly when a married couple somehow ceased to be friends with each other and are both adamant that they didn't do it!

Clearly I'm not the only one who this has happened to. A quick web search turns up numerous references to an unfriending glitch, such as this one on Yahoo Answers.

If this really is a facebook glitch, I'm left with another disturbing thought ~ that the person who I am no longer friends with thinks that I unfriended them!

PS If you're wondering about the Friend Tracker image at the top right, it's one of the features of Social Fixer, a handy browser extension that allows you to customise Facebook to some extent.

  1. Facebook sure does act weird sometimes.

  2. I don't have a FB account because I really don't care about cyber-friends. All my "friends" are real (and few!) but in my real world.

    Good luck to you, Alice.

    1. Judgmental, arent we? friends come in all forms, some people just have the ability to make friends in multiple ways and in multiple places. try being "nice". maybe that might help your social situation. Good luck Billie :)

  3. I'm quite sure that facebook does have some unfriending glitch. Once I visited an acquaintance's page and found out we are no longer friends, since we didn't really know each other so well so I just let it be. But some time later I visited his page for a 2nd time & we were again friends, but neither I nor he had sent a second friend request.

  5. Same has happened to me also. For sure it is Facebook or some malicious code on Facebook severs doing the rounds Facebook unfriend'd my girlfriend and 2 work mates worse is how do you know who has been removed from your friends if they don't mention it to you.

  6. How I know if someone unfriends me is that social fixer (link above) tells me. Unfortunately it doesn't work on the Android version of Firefox.

  8. The link that you show in your screen shot says "account inactive", which means that person disabled their account. You would be friends again if they re-enabled their account.

    1. That particular one was for a disabled account, but I've had plenty of others where the accounts have not been disabled, and I've opened their profile in another tab and it's shown that I'm no longer friends with them.

  9. I am also facing the same problem from last many months. It's very irritating. Unknowingly this happens and get to know after long time that a person is not there in our friend list.
Wat is the solution on this?

    1. Aside from using Social Fixer to find out when people unfriend you, then contacting them to ask whether they have done it deliberately or whether it's the Facebook glitch that has done it, I really don't know!

Of course, as I said above, because I'm not good at dealing with confrontation, most of the time I won't contact the person to ask if they did it on purpose! Maybe I just need to have a thicker skin...

  10. And here is the same thing happening to me. Few hours ago it was ok and now 1 friend is missing from the list. And she didn't unfriend me because we checked each others activity logs and nothing indicates why this happening. I'll take a look in the next days maybe we will be friends again.
For a serious company like Facebook this is BIG BUG. If I get this kind of inconsistency on my servers I will get fired or transferred to Siberia or worse :p
AND Facebook don't ignore this, because bugs like this cost your business.

  13. I see there is a lot of "yeah met too's" here but are there actually any solutions as to why this is happening??

    1. It appears that Facebook denies that it happens, and it remains possible that it really is a conscious decision by somebody, every time it happens.

I can't find any "solution" except to use a friend tracker like Social Fixer, then re-friend anybody who unfriends you.

  14. I know I'm totally late to this discussion, but I've spent the whole day trying to figure out how to ask someone if I did something or said something wrong to cause him to unfriend me. We're not super close, but knowing him in RL (and being friends--or at least friendly--with his partner leaves me wondering what I did--and being stupid-insecure about stuff like that has made this an unpleasant day). I'd just about convinced myself that maybe it was just a clean out of people he doesn't interact with much or maybe clicking "delete friend" on my name when he meant to hit someone else's and that I shouldn't take it personally, when I remembered FB had *added* someone to my friends list earlier in the year and I wondered if they might drop people, too. (And there is NO way I'd ever have added the woman I was suddenly friends with. Like never, ever, EVER). So I searched on it, and here I am.

FB is pretty amendment that it never happens, but now I'm wondering if it's a glitch, and if he isn't sitting there on his end thinking "what did I do to make her unfriend me?" (There seem to be a few other people FB is suggesting I friend that I could have *sworn* I was already friends with, because I remember sending them requests and I *thought* they were accepted).

Reason number sixty-seven to get off FB. I do NOT need this kind of stress. (Not that I'll actually leave, but, you know....)

Thanks for the safe place to vent :)

    1. If the person you suddenly found added to your profile was a spammer or similar, it's quite likely that it was the hijacked account of someone that you did have on your friends list. It's not uncommon for spammers to hack an account through one of the various password stealing techniques, change the name and photos, delete all the history of the profile then start spamming. When you see it, you think that it is a new account because everything old has been removed.

  15. I think this is an FB bug it happened to me many times (and still happening and sometimes random) but that one time I've had enough and to my luck that person who 'unfriended' me is my real life friend from HS (but never really chat on FB so this was a first) so I messaged him why did he unfriend me? And he said no, he never unfriended anyone except his ex-GF. (We're now FB friends again lol)
There's also that one time that it happened to me last year for 3 straight weeks every Sunday exactly that someone will be deleted from my friend list, it's like FB is messing with us.
The friends that gets deleted from your list (in my case) are usually whom you don't speak/interact with each other at all in FB(chat) even if that one time you greeted HBD in their timeline or liked their pictures
I use FB Purity just to let you people know.
